Installing Starlink with trees in East Texas
The short version: Starlink needs a clear view of the sky. Starlink says even small obstructions can cause interruptions. Run the obstruction check before you buy. If ground level is blocked, Starlink suggests mounting higher on a roof, wall or pole.
Check before you buy
- Install the Starlink app (iOS or Android).
- Go to where you'd put the dish and open "Check for Obstructions."
- Hold your phone at the height and angle the dish would sit, then follow the guided scan.
- Try several spots. Starlink recommends doing this before ordering if you're in a heavily obstructed area.
Picking a mount spot
- If there's no clear view from the ground, Starlink suggests an elevated spot such as a roof, pole or wall.
- Starlink's install guide says the dish should be within 35 degrees of vertical.
- Trees grow, and a spot that's clear now may not be in a few years. If you can, pick the spot with the most margin.
- For roof or pole work you're not comfortable with, use a qualified installer.
After install
Once installed, the dish builds its own obstruction map. Starlink says this takes about 12 hours and keeps filling in over time. The app shows how often you're interrupted, which helps you decide whether to move the dish.
Common questions
Can I trim trees instead of mounting higher?
Sometimes. The obstruction check shows which part of the sky is blocked, so you can see whether trimming or a taller mount would clear it. Hire a pro for large trees near lines or structures.
